Lecture | FRIAS Lunch Lecture by Prof. Jürgen Rüland

On Thursday, November 20th, 2014, Prof. Rüland will hold a lecture on "Studying Southeast Asia in Freiburg: How Social Actors Cooperate" The lecture will take place frm 12:15 until 13:00 at KG III, HS 3042, University of Freiburg.

The lecture provides an overview on interdisciplinary research conducted under the aegis of the FRIAS Research Focus Southeast Asia. The presentation starts with explaining how scholars of different disciplinary backgrounds (political science, social and cultural anthropology, economics and Asian history) have developed a modern conceptual approach for the study of a major non-Western world region under the umbrella of a 6-year BMBF-funded project. This approach bridges very diverse epistemological and methodological schools of thought and firmly grounds Southeast Asian Studies in social practice. The presentation introduces research themes studied by members of the FRIAS Research Focus. The common denominator of these themes is to explore how social actors in Southeast Asia cooperate in order to find solutions to the region's pressing collective action problems. Examples for such cultures of cooperation range from cooperation at the local level to the international level, such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
