On 16 November 2018, Jürgen Rüland spoke at the Conference “China and the EU in the Era of Regional and Interregional Cooperation. The Belt and Road Initiative in Comparative Perspective” on “China’s Interregional Relations.” The conference was jointly organized by the Free University of Brussels, Institute of European Studies and the ULB Confucius Institute Brussels on 16 and 17 November 2018.

On 27 September 2018 Maria-Gabriela Manea and Jürgen Rüland presented a paper at the 2018 Congress of the German Association of Political Science (DVPW) in Frankfurt. The paper entitled “Civilian Power Redux? The European Parliament as a Norm Entrepreneur and Parliamentary Diplomacy towards China and Southeast Asia” was a contribution to the panel on “Regionalism and Democracy,” chaired by Andreas Grimmel (University of Hamburg) and Jürgen Rüland.

Maria-Gabriela Manea and Jürgen Rüland spoke on “Localizing Parliamentary Oversight: A Comparative Area Studies Approach to Military Reform in Indonesia and Nigeria”. Jürgen Rüland co-chaired (with Patrick Köllner, GIGA Hamburg) the section on “Comparative Area Studies” and presented a paper on “Context, Concepts and Comparison in Southeast Asian Studies” (co-authored with Mikko Huotari, MERICS, Berlin).

EADI Prize for Excellence in Development Research for Anne-Kathrin Weber

Anne-Kathrin Weber, member of the International Relations Chair and the Southeast Asian studies group was awarded the EADI Prize for Excellence in Development Research. She received the award for her paper "Why Companies Go Green - A Constructivist View on Corporate Sustainability Activities in the Forest Sector." The paper was submitted to the European Association for Development Research and Training Institutes' (EADI) Nordic Conference held in Bergen at 21-23 August 2017. The paper, inter-alia, also draws from experiences in Indonesia.

World Class Professor Program (WCP)

Prof. Schlehe was invited in September 2017 to visit the Center of Southeast Asian Social Studies at Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta. The invitation was funded by the “World Class Professor Program” of the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia. Prof. Schlehe conducted research on maritime disasters (“Notions of Nature and the Normalization of Danger at the South Coast of Java”). In the Winter term 2017/18 the „Southeast Asian Studies at Freiburg“ group will host a visit of six Indonesian scholars.
