Digital tandem research: “Witnessing Corona among Indonesian and German Youth”
The Departments of Anthropology at the University of Freiburg, Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta and University of Indonesia in Jakarta organize student tandems in order to explore experiences and understanding of everyday life of young people in Asia and Europe in the times of Corona. The project is integrated in Judith Schlehe’s seminar on Youth Cultures in Indonesia in the Summer Term 2020.

Dissertation Prize for Mirjam Lücking. German Anthropological Association gives distinction to thesis on the “Arabic world” of Indonesia
The German Anthropological Association (DGSKA) has bestowed its first Dissertation Prize on Dr. Mirjam Lücking. Lücking, a cultural anthropologis, receives prize money of 1,000 euros for her doctoral thesis, “Indonesians and their Arab World. Guided Mobility among Labour Migrants and Mecca Pilgrims.”

PR University Freiburg - Neither a market or a black market In Cambodia Robert John is researching the social, economic and scientific aspects of the trade in sand .
Sand is in demand wherever cities are growing. Robert John has researched all the operations connected with the trade in sand, taking Cambodia, where construction is booming, as his example. And to meet demand, sand sometimes also trickles through dubious channels. John hopes his findings could help to moderate the negative effects of the trade.

Tandem Research between the University of Freiburg and Gadjah Mada University Yogyakarta continues in 2019
The international and interdisciplinary tandem-research-cooperation between the Gadjah Mada University Yogyakarta and the University of Freiburg will be continued in Spring 2019. Four Indonesian students of cultural anthropology will come to Freiburg in May 2019 and conduct field research with students from Freiburg University under the theme "Anthropology of Environmental Activism".

The Jakarta Post | Jürgen Rüland explains why ASEAN needs a regional Parliament
In a guest article Prof. Rüland explains that the existing Asian Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) is merely "a façade of legitimacy" vested with very few rights and meeting only once a year. He argues that ASEAN's decision impact a large part of the Southeast Asian population and therefore the organization needs to "become more inclusive and accountable". In his opinion, one way to achieve this would be a reform of AIPA that would make the parliament more representative and powerful.
