Jürgen Rüland participated in the International Conference on “Forty Years of ASEAN-EU Cooperation: Achievements and the Way Forward,” organized by the International Relations Institute of Cambodia (IRIC) of the Royal Academy of Cambodia in Phnom Penh on 31 October 2018. He spoke on “Civilian Power Redux? The European Parliament as a Norm Entrepreneur and Parliamentary Diplomacy towards China and Southeast Asia.”

On October 16 Jürgen Rüland spoke the the TRaNS-SIEAS Conference: Assessing ASEAN Communities in 2015 hosted by the Institute for East Asian Studies, Sogang University (SIEAS) on “Democratizing foreign policymaking in Indonesia and the democratization of ASEAN”

The topic of his speech was "ASEAN as an Actor in International Fora". The ASEAN Law academy was organized by the Center of International Law (CIL) at National University of Singapore from 19-26 July 2018.

On 16 November 2018, Jürgen Rüland spoke at the Conference “China and the EU in the Era of Regional and Interregional Cooperation. The Belt and Road Initiative in Comparative Perspective” on “China’s Interregional Relations.” The conference was jointly organized by the Free University of Brussels, Institute of European Studies and the ULB Confucius Institute Brussels on 16 and 17 November 2018.

On the 6 of November 2017 he gave a speech at the Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asia Centre on "ASEAN as an Actor in International Fora: Its Role in the UN and WTO"

He spoke on “ASEAN as an Actor in the United Nations: Role Concepts, Rhetoric and Cohesion.” The workshop was organized by the NEOMA Business School and Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) in Paris on 26 and 27 October 2017.

On the 21 of March 2018 he gave a speech on "The Geopolitics of Competitive Connectivity: Power, Institutions and Diminished Multilateralism in Indo-Pacific-Asia".
