ALMA Research Series - To the ones in need or the ones you need? The Political Economy of Central Discretionary Grants: Empirical Evidence from Indonesia

Anna Fünfgeld and Lukas Maximilian Müller are currently or have been attached as visiting scholars Scholars at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Jakarta. Anna Fünfgeld conducted her research stay in Fall 2017, while Lukas Müller is currently a fellow since January until May.

She took part in the panel "A Coral-free Future? Renewable Energy and Post-Extractivism in the Southeast Asian Context" at the one-day conference: The politics of Climate Change in Southeast Asia.

Anna Fünfgeld presented papers on "Energy Infrastructure as Multi-Scalar Challenges of ASEAN Connectivity" and "Just Energy? Social Justice and the Indonesian Coal Sector". Maria-Gabriela Manea and Jürgen Rüland spoke on “Localizing Parliamentary Oversight: A Comparative Area Studies Approach to Military Reform in Indonesia and Nigeria”. Jürgen Rüland co-chaired (with Patrick Köllner, GIGA Hamburg) the section on “Comparative Area Studies” and presented a paper on “Context, Concepts and Comparison in Southeast Asian Studies” (co-authored with Mikko Huotari, MERICS, Berlin).

Prof. Jürgen Rüland participated as a source person in a public hearing on the future of EU-ASEAN realtions held by the European Parliament at 18 June 2013.

Due to the successful evaluation of the SEA Studies at Freiburg project, the BMBFdecided to extend its sponsorship for another two years (starting from November 2013).

In the academic year 2014/2015 the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) will organize a one‐year FRIAS Research Focus on "Dynamic Alignments and Dealignments in Global Southeast Asia". As a part of this Research Focus, FRIAS advertises 4 Junior Fellowships and 4 External Senior Fellowships.

From 14 to 16 January 2015, the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) will host an interdisciplinary workshop.
