COLLABORATIVE COLLOQIUM | Upcoming Sessions for Summer Term 2019
The following Summer Term will see us hold a series of collaborative colloquium sessions on various issues related to Southeast Asian Studies, in collaboration with the Centre on Transcultural Asian Studies (CETRAS). We welcome any participation by interested individuals. The collaborative colloquium sessions are designed to foster fruitful and productive discussions in an open atmosphere. On 16 November 2018, Jürgen Rüland spoke at the Conference “China and the EU in the Era of Regional and Interregional Cooperation. The Belt and Road Initiative in Comparative Perspective” on “China’s Interregional Relations.” The conference was jointly organized by the Free University of Brussels, Institute of European Studies and the ULB Confucius Institute Brussels on 16 and 17 November 2018.

Jürgen Rüland participated in the International Conference on “Forty Years of ASEAN-EU Cooperation: Achievements and the Way Forward,” organized by the International Relations Institute of Cambodia (IRIC) of the Royal Academy of Cambodia in Phnom Penh on 31 October 2018. He spoke on “Civilian Power Redux? The European Parliament as a Norm Entrepreneur and Parliamentary Diplomacy towards China and Southeast Asia.”

On 27 September 2018 Maria-Gabriela Manea and Jürgen Rüland presented a paper at the 2018 Congress of the German Association of Political Science (DVPW) in Frankfurt. The paper entitled “Civilian Power Redux? The European Parliament as a Norm Entrepreneur and Parliamentary Diplomacy towards China and Southeast Asia” was a contribution to the panel on “Regionalism and Democracy,” chaired by Andreas Grimmel (University of Hamburg) and Jürgen Rüland.

29 October 2018 - Lecture on “Coal, Palm Oil and Indigenous Rights in Kalimantan, Indonesia”.
The event will include two talks given by representatives of the Indonesian NGO, “WAHLI”. The screening of the short version of the documentary film “Asimetris” made by “Watchdoc” and an Introduction and discussion on sustainable palm oil seals hosted by “Watch Indonesia!”.
