Günther G. Schulze studied economics at the University of Hamburg, Germany and graduated in 1988 as Diplom-Volkswirt. He studied international economics at the University of Konstanz, where he received his lic.oec.int. in 1989. He received his PhD in economics at the University of Konstanz in 1995 with a dissertation on the political economy of capital controls. 1995-1996 he was a visiting scholar at Stanford University and returned to Konstanz to complete his Habilitation in economics with a collection of articles on international economics in 2000. In 2000/01 he served as associated professor for resource economics at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and as professor of economics at the University of Freiburg beginning April 2001. In January 2002 he was appointed Full Professor of Economics at the University of Freiburg. He was Co-founder and Co-organizer of the Integrated Master Programs “Master of Economics and Politics”, “Master of Finance” and “Master of Internet Economics” and serves as the coordinator for the Master of Economics and Politics. He was Dean of Student Affairs (undergraduate and graduate), member of the faculty steering committee 2006 – 2008 and the Director of the Continued Studies Program in Economics and Statistics 2006 – 2009. Since 2008 he is a member of the University Senate.

His research interests include international economics, political economy and development economics with a special emphasis on Southeast Asia. He has published or edited books with Cambridge and Oxford University Press and recently edited a volume titled “Reformen für Deutschland” on the current economic problems of Germany. He published over 20 articles in international peer-reviewed journals such as German Economic Review, Perspektiven der Wirtschaftspolitik, Economics of Governance, World Economics, Journal of Economics Behavior and Organization, Public Choice, and Economic Inquiry and a similar number of publications in collected volumes. One emphasis of his current research is the effect of democratization and decentralization in Indonesia on public service delivery and the quality of governance.
