On 18 June 2013, Prof. Rüland participated in the hearing organized by the Committee of Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament on “Foreign Policy Considerations in EU Relations with ASEAN and Southeast Asia”, in Brussels. Prof. Rüland contributed a statement on “ASEAN Citizens’ Rights: Rule of Law, Judiciary and Law Enforcement.”

COLLABORATIVE COLLOQUIUM | Dr. Markus Mietzner: "Democratic Transitions Compared"
This colloquium will be presented by Dr. Marcus Mietzner, a guest fellow of Southeast Asian Studies at Freiburg. The talk focuses on the similarities and differences between the democratic transitions in Indonesia and Egypt. Particular attention will be paid to the role of the military in both transitions, with the army in Egypt constituting a much higher obstacle to democratization than its Indonesian counterpart. The importance of the divisions between Islamists and liberals will also be discussed, as will be the quality of electoral management and party organization. The first colloquium on the 18th of November will discuss the role of "Music and Fieldwork ind Southeast" Asia. The second colloquium on the 4th of December zooms in on the question of "Why is Burmese pop music so bland and so popular". The second colloquium will be presented by Prof. Ward Keeler of UT Austin.

Under the new title "From Tandem to Teamwork. EADI Prize for Excellence in Development Research for Anne-Kathrin Weber
Anne-Kathrin Weber, member of the International Relations Chair and the Southeast Asian studies group was awarded the EADI Prize for Excellence in Development Research. She received the award for her paper "Why Companies Go Green - A Constructivist View on Corporate Sustainability Activities in the Forest Sector." The paper was submitted to the European Association for Development Research and Training Institutes' (EADI) Nordic Conference held in Bergen at 21-23 August 2017. The paper, inter-alia, also draws from experiences in Indonesia.

Anna Fünfgeld presented papers on "Energy Infrastructure as Multi-Scalar Challenges of ASEAN Connectivity" and "Just Energy? Social Justice and the Indonesian Coal Sector". Maria-Gabriela Manea and Jürgen Rüland spoke on “Localizing Parliamentary Oversight: A Comparative Area Studies Approach to Military Reform in Indonesia and Nigeria”. Jürgen Rüland co-chaired (with Patrick Köllner, GIGA Hamburg) the section on “Comparative Area Studies” and presented a paper on “Context, Concepts and Comparison in Southeast Asian Studies” (co-authored with Mikko Huotari, MERICS, Berlin).

Exhibition | "The Act of Living" at KoKi Freiburg
On the ocassion of the 50th anniversary of the mass killings of communists in Indonesia in late 1965, the center for Southeast Asian Studies in cooperation with the "Kommunale Kino Freiburg" organizes a photo exhibition which can be visited for free at the KoKi beginning the 14th until the 24th of July. There will be an opening ceremony on the 14th starting at 6 pm, which will be followed by a screening of the movie "The Women and the Generals".
